What does 2018 hold?

What does 2018 hold?

Hooray! It’s the first week back in the office after the Christmas break!

Alright, many of us will have fuzzy heads and are disappointed that there’s more to do than graze on leftovers. But hey, new year, new start. I’m certainly thinking a lot about what the past twelve months has brought, and what the next twelve will bring.

We did a lot in 2017, and it looks like 2018 will be an odd one for enterprise technology so we’re hoping to do a lot this year too.

(By the way: it's worth your while reading to the end of this post, especially if you're in planning mode too.)

What’s happening in enterprises in 2018?

Towards the end of last year, we released our annual State of IT research. Year on year it showed that big companies are going to be investigating (and probably spending money on) many big trends like AR and blockchain. The politics of which part of the organisation actually does this investigation means that IT departments have a confusing year ahead, and technology vendors are going to need to carefully tailor how they market their offerings as a result.

Since that initial view of the research, we’ve released individual reports on a few specific topics:

  • The impact of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, due to become law in May 2018. The data shows that it’s likely to be the IT department who are largely tasked with GDPR compliance, but recent changes in how enterprises manage IT means that it’s a Herculean task.
  • Whether cloud computing will continue to grow in use and importance. Spoiler: it most definitely will, but it’s a particular variety of cloud computing that enterprises are interested in over the next year.
  • The importance of customer experience and personalisation. It’s a massive area of investment for enterprises this year, but which part of the organisation implements it is definitely surprising.

We’ve got more reports coming shortly on blockchain, cryptocurrencies, digital transformation, the Internet of Things, and security over the next month or so. There’s some findings that are causing lots of debate in the office... More on those very soon.

What’s happening for Vanson Bourne in 2018?

A very good question!

Last year was our biggest ever: we performed more interviews in more countries with more types of people than ever before, which resulted in hundreds of news headlines (leading to many many leads and sales) for our clients. Here's a fun infographic:

This year we’ll be looking to run our research with more people than ever... again. As it’s January, we’re busily putting plans and strategies in place to give us a wider reach and more expertise.

Last year, we announced that we’d be fundraising for the Marfan Trust and the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals Charity. That’s part of our planning for this year too.

Helping you in 2018

One final thought.

As we’ve been planning and scheming, we’ve found having access to data has been invaluable. Some of the data we’ve been using comes from the State of IT research above. We’ve been able to dig into the numbers and found things which have given us a very strong direction for the next year.

We’d like to offer that data to you, too.

If there’s any insight you need about how enterprises are thinking about IT and technology in general at the moment - what they’re spending on, which parts of the organisation are spending, what the buyers are thinking about, and so on - drop me a line and we’ll see if we have data we can give you to help.

You won’t find a better offer in the post-Christmas sales.
