Mobile work threatens security
Damovo finds heads of IT face increased security threats from mobile working
On behalf of its client, Damovo UK, PR agency Spark commissioned research on mobile working using Vanson Bourne’s omnibus enterprise service. In April 2010 200 UK IT decision makers were interviewed from commercial organisations with more than 1,000 employees.
The research revealed that 9 out of 10 UK IT decision makers have seen an increase in security threats linked to employees using mobile devices. In addition, as 95% of respondents also see their workforce becoming more mobile over the next ten years. This situation raises serious security implications for businesses in the future. The research results also draw attention to problems faced by heads of IT when trying to enforce mobile usage policies, especially as it is becoming more common for mobile workers to use the same mobile for both business and personal use. One key activity that worried IT decision makers was mobile social networking and its potential to lead to security vulnerabilities and reduced productivity.
But it is not just the users’ activities that cause problems. Four out of five IT decision makers found it difficult to manage and secure mobile devices if the IT department had not been involved in purchasing them. 82% of respondents find that inconsistent upgrade cycles lead to increased mobile security and performance concerns.
These research results were then published within a report and used by Damovo to highlight the need for more effective mobile device management strategy. In addition Spark implemented a highly effective media campaign securing strong media interest.
