Is business prepared to be green

Morse finds UK IT departments unaware of IT energy consumption and their businesses unprepared for new legislation

On behalf of Morse, an IT Services and Technology company, its PR agency Spark Communications commissioned research from Vanson Bourne to assess the level of preparedness for new carbon emissions reduction and energy efficiency legislation.  The results were then used for PR activity to support Morse’s work in providing data centre optimisation services to large organisations. 200 IT decision makers were interviewed from a range of commercial sectors and from organisations with more than 1000 employees in the UK.

The research found 65% of UK companies unprepared to comply with carbon emissions reduction legislation despite 72% saying that making the business IT environment more ‘green’ was a top priority for their organisation.  Although 56% did have specific targets for reducing the energy that IT consumed, which would represent a great step towards compliance, unfortunately over two thirds of respondents were also not aware of how much power their IT operation uses in their organisation and 64% don’t pay for energy from their IT budget. As a result, IT decision makers simply cannot see the link between any improvements made and the financial impact on their organisation.

The research findings indicated that a much greater awareness of energy consumption needed to be created to assist businesses to achieve government targets for carbon emission reduction. However, these targets can only be meaningful if IT departments know exactly how much power they are using and can save if measures are taken. The subsequent press release, focused on this lack of preparation for legislation and the need for IT departments to focus on the cost of energy consumption, generated comprehensive media coverage for the company.
