Savvis, a global leader in cloud infrastructure and hosted IT solutions for enterprises, commissioned Vanson Bourne to conduct its 2010 cloud services research study, which investigated business attitudes toward the economic downturn and how this affects the use of cloud computing. More than 450 IT decision-makers and more than 200 business decision-makers in mid-size to large businesses were interviewed from a range of commercial sectors in the U.K., U.S. and Singapore.

The research found that the biggest issue for businesses in 2010 was doing more with less budget. These seemingly contradictory aims put organisations under significant pressure to achieve cost savings without impacting business growth. This emphasis on cost savings was also cited as the main factor driving respondents toward cloud services.

However, other benefits from cloud services are also sought by businesses. Thirty-six percent of IT decision-makers stated ”the ability to scale up and down computer, storage and bandwidth consumption to manage fluctuating demand,” 47 percent selected “improved reliability” and 68 percent thought the “flexibility of cloud computing” could help businesses recover from the economic downturn.

With a clearer view of what businesses expect from cloud services and, in particular, its impact on IT operations, Savvis then created a report titled “Rising to the Challenge: Strategies for Success” to highlight the ways cloud services can be used to alleviate the pressures organisations are under due to the economic downturn. Savvis’ PR firm, OgilvyPR, then conducted a media campaign around the study and report subsequently generating comprehensive media coverage on numerous technology websites.
